Beware of the Characteristics of Nutrient Deficiency Plants

Plants need nutrients to grow and develop. For that, you need to fertilize regularly according to the needs of the plant. Malnutrition is a nightmare because the condition is rarely recognized quickly.




Nutrient deficiency can be identified from the condition of the plant. When there is a lack of nutrients, plants will show abnormal symptoms such as changes in color and leaf condition. In order for these deficiency conditions to be immediately addressed, you must recognize the characteristics of plants experiencing nutrient deficiency as below.


1. Young leaves turn yellow


Young plant leaves that have turned yellow can be a sign that the plant lacks iron (Fe) or manganese (Mn) nutrients. The element manganese functions for cell division and is used in the process of respiration and photosynthesis. While iron is used for plant respiration and the formation of leaf green matter.


2. Mature leaves turn yellow


This symptom can be caused by a plant that lacks molybdenum nutrients. These nutrients function to bind nitrogen from the air and activate the nitrogenase enzyme.


3. Old leaves turn yellow


Yellowing old leaves could be because the plant lacks nitrogen, potassium, magnesium, or calcium. Nitrogen and Potassium are macro nutrients that plants need in the right amount. While magnesium and calcium are micro-nutrients that are still needed by plants even in smaller amounts.


4. Young leaves roll up


The condition of young leaves that curl because the plant lacks potassium, zinc, boron, or moblybdenum. Potassium serves to form proteins and carbohydrates, strengthen plants, and plant resources to survive drought and disease. Zinc activates various types of enzymes and plays a role in auxin biosynthesis. While boron functions to transport carbohydrates into the plant body, helps plant parts to grow actively, and plays a role in cell division in seed plants.


Kuntet or stunted plants can be caused by plants that are deficient in sodium and phosphorus. Both of these nutrients are macronutrients that should not be lacking. Sodium functions to stimulate plant vegetative growth, form green leaf material, and form proteins, fats, and various other organic compounds. While phosphorus serves to stimulate root growth, the process of assimilation and respiration of plants, as well as accelerate flowering and maturation.
